The Covid-19 pandemic has affected each of us beginning with the closure of schools in Oregon on March 16th. As we approach six months of living under these new conditions the Eugene Waldorf School continues to look forward to the 20-21 school year. Our teachers and staff have put countless hours of planning into creating a plan for the upcoming school year. Some of the highlights of the plan are as follows:
Our plan follows the Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidelines from the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority. Our blueprint for reopening has been been submitted to ODE and Lane County Health for review. You can read the complete version of our Blueprint for Reopening here. Our Early Childhood Covid-19 Health and Safety Plan is found here.
Our school will be able to accommodate all students on campus five days per week for full school days as soon as the state and local metrics allow in-person classes. We will start our year on Monday, September 14th for distance learning in grades 4-8 and Wednesday, September 16th for in person class for our preschool through 3rd grade students.
Students on campus will spend most of their school day outdoors. We are building one covered outdoor classroom structure and are in the process of fundraising in order to build two more. You can contribute to our outdoor classroom construction fund here. There is an established body of research showing the benefit to children of time spent outdoors, particularly during the school day. Time in nature has always been a central piece of Waldorf education and our school is excited to expand on the outdoor learning opportunities our five acre campus affords us.
Our 4th through 8th graders will start the year in Comprehensive Distance Learning. Students who are distance learning will be offered optional afternoon classes and opportunities to connect with each other and their teacher in person on campus several afternoons per week.
Students, faculty and staff who are on campus will be required to complete health checks prior to the start of on-campus class each day. Students five years and older and all teachers and staff will be required to wear face coverings or face shields when on campus.
More details about school this fall can be found in our Back-to-School packet. This packet will be sent to parents in early September.
